Selling Yesterday

The Brandon Seifert Story

One of the things that you get consistently at conventions or bookstores or signings, if you last, is what is your advice and how do you do it. And I always end up saying the same thing. It always comes down to commitment to your craft. That’s the only thing you can control. You cannot control anything else. All you can control your relationship to your work and the effort you’re willing to put into it, and how willing you are to recognize that you’re never going to be good enough and that you always have to get better. There aren’t many trades in the world, and this is an artistic trade, but when you’re writing for a publisher, for money, there are not many trades in the world where you can say what you know is not enough. There’s always more to learn. You can learn the tax code for 2012 and you’ll be covered for 2013. But the thing you wrote yesterday and the thing you write tomorrow, you pray to God that is a qualitative difference that what’s coming out tomorrow will be better than yesterday because of what you learned.

NERDIST: You must be buried in comics yourself. What are you reading and enjoying right now?

BOB SCHRECK: Oh, boy…enjoying comics…I have a very small list that I’m reading. Let’s just say anything that comes out by Jeff Lemire or Craig Thompson – it’s not so much comics, it’s the comic book creators that I follow. If Matt Wagner or Ed Brubaker does something…there’s just so much out there now. Brandon Seifert, he’s a new kid on the block doing WITCH DOCTOR. I’m constantly sampling stuff because I have to, but I run to certain projects. Renee French is a person who I just adore; anytime she puts out a new project, I just run and get it. She’s an insanely good illustrator.

What happens when you take TV shows like ‘House’ and ‘Fringe,’ get them really drunk, lock them in a room together, and blast some of Barry White’s greatest hits? We’ll give you a hint. It begins with ‘Witch’ and ends with ‘Doctor’… a unique combination of spine-tingling terror and medical drama.” — MTV Splashpage

Ambush Bug here. I had a chance to catch up with friend of AICN COMICS Brandon Seifert recently regarding his upcoming projects. Most know Seifert from his breakout hit comic book miniseries WITCH DOCTOR from Image Comics and Robert Kirkman’s Skybound imprint. This week, Seifert has the lead story in the HELLRAISER ANNUAL from BOOM! Studios. Here’s what Seifert had to say about WITCH DOCTOR and HELLRAISER…

"Beyond the Cape: Genre Fiction in Comics" panel at Stumptown Comics Fest

Stumptown Comics Fest announced their panel schedule. Here’s the one panel I’m on, along with my Witch Doctor partner in crime Lukas. If you plan on attending, please RSVP to the Facebook event for it!

Sunday, 2-2:45 pm • Beyond the Cape: Genre Fiction in Comics
Join moderator Christian Lipski and creators Vera Brosgol, Brian Churilla, Brian Hurtt, Lukas Ketner, Batton Lash, Steve Lieber, Dylan Meconis, Ron Randall, and Brandon Seifert in a conversation about the other kinds of comics. Horror, sci-fi, western, romance — creators talk about the world outside the super-human. Is the ‘mainstream’ expanding to include other genres, or are the smaller publishers growing their audience? What are the publishing options for non-super titles? Is it a worthwhile direction for authors and artists?
